ST.SEBASTIAN'S CHURCH, MADHAVARAM, CHENNAI -60

On 26th June 2010, Saint Sebastian's Church in Madhavaram, celebrated the anniversary of the founding of the Franciscan Order (OFM) — in 1209.

A special Holy Mass presided over by Rev A.M Chinnappa, Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore, was celebrated on the occasion followed by felicitation, a documentary movie showing the socio-cultural-spiritual and developmental activities of Franciscans all over India and cultural programe— This was organised to mark the culmination of World Priest Year and to mark the 800 years of the Franciscan Order. Participation of around 150 priests and religious sisters and 2000 parishioners from different parishes made the event a memorable one.

The Franciscan Order has a rich history of selfless service to the humanity, and its contribution to the church in Chennai is well known. Fr.John Chrysostom O.F.M. the Parish Priest of St.Sebastian's church has taken up many social, medical and youth awareness programmes and had been striving for the betterment of society by contributing to spiritual growth, social harmony, promotion of primary, higher and vocational education among others.

On the occasion the parishioners appreciated the contribution of St.Sebastian's Church to the education of the poor and the Counseling Fr.Joy V O.F.M. offers to the Cancer-Patients in the Cancer Institute at Adyar and in the Franciscan Clarist Hospice called 'JEEVODAYA' and also the Family and Individual Counseling given in the parish. They said that the contribution of the Franciscan Order to society as a whole is exemplary and we as members of the church are proud to be a part of the great history.

The people around the area were very poor and worked as casual labourers in local tanneries. The church revived their faith in God, educated them and did social services. The Franciscans in Madhavaram are foundly called by the native people as "The ORDER OF THE NEEDY".
